Rustic Surf Living
So we are finally back in our house and after months and months of work, hectic family life and finding time to unpack we have put together the living room and it has come out better then I ever really imagined. I'm super proud of what we were able to accomplish and how nicely everything fit together. I even submitted it for Apartment Therapy's

Fresh from the Garden
It is planting season here in the Hamptons and I have my first harvest of the season. An abundance of Kale, more than I know what to do with quite frankly. Looking forward to making juice, smoothies, kale chips, and whatever tasty treats can come from this awesome plant.
use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without
This is something that I struggle with on a daily basis and deciphering between need vs want is something that I need to remind myself of more often. There were so many great comments on this topic and one thing really stuck with me and I want to make it my new mantra...
"use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without"
Our American way of life and especially within the fashion business I am in which relies on newness and the updating of trends, puts this added pressure on you to want more then you need or should have. Like many of the comments to this article, I agree that there is way to much stuff in our homes and in the world and we are rapidly running out of room.
I will be at the forefront of this within the next 2 weeks as we move back to our house and go through the 2 different "storage" spaces in our garage and basement that are full top to bottom of stuff we had but didn't need in the year we would be gone. A huge purge is in my future and I am very excited to let a good bulk of it go. Will let you know how I end up.
Maybe if I focus on the big things in my life, my kids, husband, friends and family then the little things won't seem so important and I can curtail the desire to acquire them. maybe...

Vanicek living room-stage one planning
The count down is on! Just heard from our renters that we will be less then 3 weeks away from getting our beloved home back. The wheels are turning and I need to start getting in serious planning mode. Here are some images of the building blocks for the living room makeover. Definitely more shopping and planning to come. (Also got some great finds on etsy that I will post soon). Bon Appetite!

Offices for Vanicek
My husband and I have been debating whether to do a second story addition on our garage to house our offices or to do something else. We have decided the most cost effective and quickest way is going to be converting our current 8x8 garden shed to a small functional workspace. I am actually really excited about it!
So of course I have been online all afternoon looking at design inspiration and materials that we can use and I keep coming back to my mantra: KISS (keep it simple stupid). Thinking back to an article that I read in Dwell magazine I started googling plywood interiors and came across this photo, which is going to be my jumping off point.
Super cool, right? Also found this amazing website from the UK Shedworking that is all about using garden sheds as offices. Good for color ideas too.
We're thinking of doing built in desks and some cool ikea track lighting with my necessity a fun "chandelier" to give it some character.
Will update as we get closer, but I think this idea is going to stick :)

The moss wall
I had my first introduction to podcasts this week when I stumbled upon an interview with Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge and Genevieve Gorder (interior designer and HGTV host) on After The Jump. Bonney started out the program with an ode to Genevieve by reminiscing about a certain episode of Trading Spaces where Gorder transformed a bedroom by adding moss to the wall. This got me thinking since this exact episode was the same spark for my obsession with design as it was for Bonney.
Fast forward 10+ years and I still think back to that moss wall and how it totally pushed you out of the box and opened your imagination. After that anything was possible. Over the past 6 months as we painstakingly wait for our house to be vacated by our renters I have been toying with the idea of adding sanded barn board to a feature wall in our living room; very trendy right now in all capacities but I love it.
Stay tuned to see what we actually do, but whatever it is, the design will be rooted from a little moss wall installed over a decade ago.

Go south to go Westport
Today meandered between a scenic drive, to stop and go traffic in a downpour, to fun treasure hunting in-between appointments in Westport Connecticut. Browsing through Anthropologie I found this amazing floor lamp; wrapped in a nautical rope this slinky light could be a perfect addition to my redesign plan for our living room. Hmmmm....

Thanks for coming, stay a while...
So, its Mother's Day and amongst the gifts, cards and thoughtful breakfast from my boys I wanted to give something special to myself that no one could give but me. Juggling 2 boys under 4, a full time traveling sales job and a recent move into a rental half the space we have been living in, I needed a place where I could focus on me. Thus this blog was born...
This is my escape where I can share my thoughts, my passions and obsessions of the moment not on anyone's deadline or nap schedule. Enjoy!
